Lanzhou University of Technology (LUT), located in Lanzhou, the capital city of Gansu Province, is a key university jointly built by the Gansu Provincial People's Government, the Ministry of Education, and the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense. It is recognized as a High-Level University in Gansu Province. The university has been undertakened for several national initiatives, including the Basic Ability Construction Project of Chinese Western and Central Universities, the National Innovative Experiment Program for College Students, and the Ministry of Education's Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program. It is also designated as a National Defense Education Characteristic School.
LUT spans two campuses, covering a total area of 2307 Chinese mu (approximately 154 hectares). It comprises 19 schools, one teaching and research department, a Graduate School, and a Wenzhou Graduate Branch. The current student enrollment is 31,401.
The university's academic structure encompasses 9 disciplinary fields: Engineering, Science, Management, Economics, Literature, Law, Education, Medicine, and Arts. Four disciplines—Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, and Environment/Ecology—have entered the top 1% of the ESI global rankings. Its Materials Science and Engineering discipline has been recommended as the National Double First-Class Initiative Breakthrough Project for provincial universities. LUT offers 6 first-level doctoral degree programs, 25 first-level master's degree programs, and 63 bachelor's degree programs. Among these, 34 programs have been ranked as National/Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Programs under the Double Ten-Thousand Plan, 19 engineering programs have passed international engineering education certification, 20 are recognized as National First-Class Undergraduate Program Construction Sites, and 6 are designated as National Characteristic Specialty Construction Sites.
The university actively promotes international exchange and cooperation, strategically serving the Belt and Road Initiative. It has established partnerships with over 40 universities in countries including the United States, Russia, and the United Kingdom. In 2020, LUT was approved to co-establish the Confucius Institute at Vinnytsia National Technical University in Ukraine. It is a member of the University Alliance of the Silk Road, the University of Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the China-Africa University Alliance Exchange Mechanism, and the China-Arab Universities 10+10 Cooperation Plan. Currently, LUT hosts more than 500 international students from 47 countries.
